Algorithmic Memories

· talk

Alex May gave a Science Gallery Bengaluru lecture on memory, time, transformation, and the poetic possibilities opened up by algorithmic and biologically informed media.

Alex May presented Algorithmic Memories at Science Gallery Bengaluru on Sunday 20 July 2025.

The lecture explored how ideas of memory, time perception, and transformation move across different media and different kinds of artistic system. Drawing on works ranging from browser-based algorithmic pieces and generative video systems to installations shaped by biotechnology and environmental thinking, the talk traced an approach to art that is both technically rigorous and conceptually open.

Alex discussed how collaboration with scientists and engagement with emerging technologies can create new poetic and critical spaces within contemporary art. Rather than treating digital systems as tools for fixed outcomes, the lecture emphasized slowness, attention, and ambiguity, inviting audiences into works that remain in process rather than resolving into didactic statements.

The event formed part of Science Gallery Bengaluru’s public programme and was supported by the British Council.
